Tempting oil reserves trapped in California shale are driving a fracking boom in California. The federal government has started auctioning off leases on public lands with fracking access to the highly anticipated Monterey Shale oil reserves. Energy suppliers and proponents say fracking will provide more affordable American energy. Agricultural interests are concerned about water supply and contamination. Environmental groups are suing California to regulate the hydraulic fracturing industry. Will the new California fracking regulations make fracking safer and remove the mystery from the practice? How could fracking impact California’s economy?
